Does HireVue Record Your Screen or Track Your Eyes? What It Records and Tracks (2026)
Does HireVue use AI, record your screen, track eye movement or detect cheating? Answers from HireVue's own pages, plus notes, blur and split screen.

Rehearse the HireVue round before it counts
HireVue records your camera and microphone while you answer. HireVue's own pages say its AI-scored video assessments analyze only the transcript of what you say, not your face, video or tone of voice, and that it dropped facial analysis in 2021. None of the HireVue pages we read say a standard video interview records your screen or tracks your eyes. HireVue has described tab-switch flagging and periodic snapshots as integrity measures, and employers configure what they turn on, so read your invitation.
That is the short version. Below, each question people search gets its own sourced answer, with a clear line between what HireVue states, what press reported and what we could not verify. All of it is as of October 2026.
At a glance
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Does HireVue use AI? | Some HireVue assessments are AI-scored. HireVue says it analyzes the transcript of your answers. Humans make final hiring decisions. |
| Is a HireVue interview an AI interview? | A one-way video interview has no live interviewer. Whether AI scores it depends on the employer and the product they bought. |
| Does HireVue record the whole time? | It records your answers. We found no HireVue page describing continuous recording, but HireVue has described periodic snapshots to confirm identity. |
| Does HireVue see or record your screen? | No page we read says standard interviews do. Coding assessments have review features such as playback. |
| Does HireVue track eye movement? | HireVue says it does not use facial analysis, video or audio data to evaluate candidates. Eye tracking is not among its listed features. |
| Does HireVue detect cheating or tab switching? | HireVue describes flagging when candidates switch tabs or windows, plus snapshots and code-similarity checks. Flags go to people for review. |
| Can you look at notes? | HireVue's candidate tips say you can keep notes next to you. Your employer's instructions still apply. |
| Does HireVue have a blur background? | A HireVue blog refers to a blur feature and says to use it only if you cannot fix your background. It may not exist in every version. |
Does HireVue use AI?
Yes, in some products, and it depends on what you were invited to do. HireVue sells live video interviewing, one-way (on-demand) video interviewing, coding assessments and AI-scored assessments. Your employer chooses which to use.
HireVue's AI in hiring page says its video assessments "don't use facial analysis, video, or audio data to evaluate candidates" and that "we analyze only the transcript of your responses." It says AI may play an important role in evaluating candidates but that humans make the final hiring decision. It describes its assessment models as "static and deterministic": trained and tested in a lab, then locked for deployment. HireVue also points to its AI Explainability Statement as the place where it explains how it mitigates bias in assessment algorithms.
HireVue's candidate FAQ is more cautious about how much AI is in a given interview. It says assessments are meant to replace older multiple-choice tests and measure what a recruiter would look for, and that the interview and assessment help recruiters make "the first cut" while "hiring decisions are made by people." It does not say every interview is AI-scored.
So when someone asks "is HireVue an AI interview," the accurate answer is: it is a recorded interview platform, some of its products score answers with AI, and the employer decides how results are used. Our HireVue interview preparation guide covers the format in detail.
What happened to facial analysis?
This is the source of much of the confusion, because older articles describe HireVue analyzing faces.
In January 2021 HireVue announced it had removed the facial analysis component from its screening assessments. SHRM's report says the company's internal research found that advances in language analysis had made speech-based assessment more predictive, and that visual analysis "no longer significantly added value." SHRM also quotes the CEO saying it was not worth the concern it was causing people. The reporting is inconsistent on timing: HireVue said the feature was dropped in 2020, while the article elsewhere says facial expressions were analyzed until "last year."
The decision followed criticism, including a complaint to the US Federal Trade Commission from the Electronic Privacy Information Center, summarized in EPIC's write-up. At that time HireVue said it would continue to analyze speech. SHRM notes that experts remained concerned about speech analysis, and reported that pauses and tone of voice were minor factors in the model at that point.
HireVue's current wording is different again. Its pages say assessments use the transcript only and exclude tone of voice. If you are comparing sources, prefer the most recent statement, and remember it describes HireVue's AI-scored assessments, not every product.
Does HireVue track eye movement?
HireVue does not list eye tracking as a feature in anything we read. Its science page says it analyzes the transcript of what a candidate says and excludes facial expressions, body language, appearance, background and tone of voice, and states that it does not use facial analysis to evaluate candidates.
Some third-party blogs claim HireVue tracks gaze. We could not trace those claims to HireVue documentation, and they conflict with each other, so we do not rely on them. A human reviewer can still watch your recording. Staring at a script is visible, as covered in our guide to HireVue interview questions, but that is a human impression rather than an eye-tracking score.
Does HireVue record the whole time?
For a one-way interview, HireVue records your answer to each question inside the response window the employer sets. Typical windows are a few minutes. HireVue's interview tips page says most on-demand interviews ask for an answer in just a few minutes, and offers a practice question first. Its candidate FAQ says most assessments take 20 to 30 minutes and suggests setting aside 45 minutes, with between five and eight questions.
We found no HireVue page that says the camera records continuously outside answer windows. We did find that HireVue has described a snapshot feature. A HireVue article from October 1, 2025 describes periodic snapshots of candidates during interviews to check identity and flag suspicious activity, which a HireVue representative called "a new feature." So "the whole time" is not accurate for video, but images may be captured periodically depending on how the employer configured the interview. We could not confirm the exact settings.
Does HireVue see or record your screen?
None of the HireVue candidate pages we read say that a standard video interview records your screen. The FAQ does not address screen recording at all.
Coding assessments are different. A HireVue article on cheating says coding challenges use similarity scoring to detect similar code submissions, plus playback features to monitor behavior during assessments. The same article lists "screen capture and image capture of the candidate" among measures HireVue says it has "explored or have slated for future investigation." That wording does not confirm screen capture is live. If you are taking a coding test, our HireVue coding assessment guide explains the format.
Some third-party blogs say employers see your screen only after a browser permission prompt. If your invitation asks you to share your screen, accept it only if you are comfortable and the instructions require it. If you are unsure, ask the recruiter.
Does HireVue detect cheating, tab switching or split screen?
HireVue publishes material on what it calls cheating and fraud mitigation. What it says in the October 2025 article:
- Periodic snapshots to confirm the same person is present throughout.
- Browser focus tracking that flags when a candidate switches tabs or windows during an interview. The HireVue representative said this "might be a good indication that you should look a little closer at their responses."
- A disclosure agreement that candidates tick before the interview, with wording such as "I agree to answer all questions in my own words," which employers can customize.
For code, HireVue describes similarity checks and playback. It does not say any of these is an automatic rejection. The wording describes signals that point a reviewer toward a closer look.
On split screen specifically: we found no HireVue documentation about it. If a tool logs when the interview window loses focus, anything that moves focus could show up, whether or not you meant anything by it. We cannot say how any given employer's setup treats a split screen.
Our advice is simple. Do not try to work around monitoring. The rules are set by the employer, a flag is reviewed by a person, and breaking the rules can end your candidacy. Close other windows, silence notifications and take the interview as instructed. If you need an accommodation, ask for it in advance.
Can you look at notes?
HireVue's candidate tips page says: "You can even keep your notes next to you in case you need a reminder during the interview." That is guidance for candidates in general, not a guarantee that every employer's rules agree, and it is separate from the pledge to answer "in your own words."
In practice, use short bullets rather than a script. Interviewers and reviewers can see when someone reads, and your timer keeps running. A few prompts such as the names of your stories, a number or two and the question's structure are plenty. Our HireVue guide lists reading from notes among the common mistakes.
Does HireVue have a blur background?
A HireVue blog on virtual interview tips says "the blur feature can work if you're in a shared space or just don't have a clean corner," warns that it can create a digital haze or glitch around your face if your lighting or camera is poor, and says to use it only if your background is too distracting to fix. It adds that blurring works best with good lighting and a solid-color background.
We did not find a help-center article that sets out which products and versions include blur, so do not assume it will appear in yours. A tidy, neutral wall is the safer choice, and it removes the dependency entirely.
What to do before you start
- Read the invitation. It states the time limits, retakes, whether the interview is scored by AI and any rules for notes or other tools.
- Do the practice question. HireVue offers one before the real interview.
- Check your camera, microphone and connection. The FAQ says you can test the microphone before starting, and that you can resume from the same link if your connection drops.
- Close other tabs and apps, and silence notifications.
- Ask your recruiter about anything the invitation does not cover. You can also ask about accommodations such as retakes or removing timers, which HireVue lists as examples.
What the AI cannot be gamed around, and what actually helps
HireVue's FAQ says there is "no course you can take that will help you game an AI-driven job assessment." The better use of your time is to be clear and specific. The transcript is what gets analyzed, so concrete answers with a situation, your actions and a result serve you better than polished delivery.
Practicing the same way
Reading about monitoring will not make you comfortable on camera. Rehearse out loud, timed, with the same setup you will use. Thita's free AI mock interview is a spoken, adaptive interviewer that asks follow-up questions and ends with a written report. It is our own format, not a copy of HireVue's recording screen, so also do a timed run on your phone camera. The free in-article practice round is a Thita-style practice of three questions in about ten minutes, typed and scored out of 10. FAQ
Does HireVue use AI?
Some HireVue products do. Its AI-scored video assessments, according to HireVue, analyze the transcript of your answers and not your face or voice tone. HireVue also says humans make the final hiring decision.
Is HireVue an AI interview?
A one-way HireVue interview has no live interviewer, but that does not mean AI scores it. The employer chooses the product and decides how results are used, so check your invitation.
Does HireVue record your screen?
No HireVue page we read says standard video interviews record your screen. Coding assessments include playback and similarity checks, and HireVue lists screen capture among measures it has explored. Ask the recruiter if your invitation asks for screen sharing.
Does HireVue see your screen?
Not as part of a standard video interview, based on the sources we read. If a permission prompt appears asking to share your screen, that is a separate setup by the employer, and you can ask why.
Does HireVue track eye movement?
HireVue says it does not use facial analysis, video or audio data to evaluate candidates, and it does not list eye tracking. It dropped facial analysis in 2021, according to SHRM.
Does HireVue record the whole time?
It records your answers within the response window. HireVue has described periodic snapshots to confirm identity, but we found no page describing continuous recording.
Does HireVue detect cheating?
HireVue describes snapshots, tab and window switch flagging, a disclosure agreement and code-similarity checks. These produce signals for a human reviewer, and HireVue's cheating article presents several measures as explored rather than confirmed.
Does HireVue detect split screen?
We found no HireVue documentation on split screen. If the platform logs focus changes, moving between windows could be flagged. Take the interview in a single window as instructed.
Can you look at notes during HireVue?
HireVue's candidate tips say you can keep notes next to you. Keep them as short prompts, not a script, and follow any rule in your employer's invitation.
Does HireVue have a blur background?
A HireVue blog mentions a blur feature and advises using it only if your background cannot be fixed. We could not confirm it is available in every version.
Sources and scope: HireVue's own pages, SHRM and EPIC coverage. Product behavior is configured by each employer and can change, so confirm with your recruiter. Checked October 2026.
