IT Service Company Interview Process: Campus Hiring Guide (2026)
Learn how Indian IT services campus hiring works, from aptitude and coding screens to technical and HR rounds, with a practical preparation path.
The IT service company interview process is usually a campus-hiring funnel rather than a product-company engineering loop: an aptitude or online screen reduces volume, a coding stage tests basic problem solving under time pressure, a technical interview checks foundations, and an HR or managerial conversation confirms fit. The important difference is scale. These processes are often designed to assess many fresh graduates consistently, so speed, fundamentals, communication and reliable execution matter more than specialised design depth.
You should still confirm the exact format with your placement cell or recruiter. Roles, campuses and hiring tracks can change the sequence. But if you prepare for the shared shape—aptitude, coding, technical discussion and HR—you will be ready for the stages that recur across Indian IT services hiring.

The shared round shape
The exact order differs, but campus recruitment in this segment tends to evaluate candidates in layers. Each layer asks a slightly different question: can you work accurately under a clock, can you write code, do you understand the foundations behind that code, and can you communicate professionally in a team environment?
Treat the process as a sequence of gates. Clearing an early screen does not mean later stages are a formality. Equally, a difficult coding question is not always the whole interview: candidates are often assessed on the clarity of their reasoning, their practical judgement and whether they can explain their past work honestly.
Round one — aptitude and online screening
The first stage is commonly an online test. Its purpose is to process a large candidate pool efficiently, so the questions often reward pace and accuracy rather than deep specialisation.
Expect some combination of quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, verbal ability and basic computer science. The technical portion may include programming fundamentals, output questions, data structures, databases, operating systems or networking concepts. The balance depends on the employer, role and campus drive.
The key preparation mistake is treating aptitude as something you can improvise. A candidate may know programming well and still lose time on percentage calculations, simple probability, seating arrangements or verbal questions. These are not necessarily difficult in isolation; they are difficult when you have a limited clock and cannot afford to get stuck.
Prepare in short, timed blocks. Review the kinds of errors you make: rushed arithmetic, misread constraints, spending too long on one puzzle, or guessing before eliminating options. The aim is not to attempt every question perfectly. It is to make sensible decisions about where your time produces marks.
For the technical part, revise definitions until you can explain them in plain language. If a prompt asks about process versus thread, indexing, normalisation, deadlock or a network protocol, you need more than a memorised line. You need enough understanding to identify the right answer when the wording changes.
Round two — coding under time pressure
The coding round is often the technical elimination point. It may appear inside the first online test or as a separate stage, but the task is similar: solve programming problems correctly, handle edge cases and submit working code before time expires.
This is usually not a contest in writing clever code. It is a test of whether you can recognise common problem shapes, choose an appropriate data structure and turn an approach into correct implementation. Arrays, strings, hashing, sorting, recursion, linked lists, stacks, queues, trees and basic graph traversal are useful foundations.
The most effective way to prepare is pattern-based practice rather than random problem collection. The DSA Patterns Sheet is free to browse and groups practice around the recurring ideas that make coding questions recognisable: two pointers, sliding windows, prefix sums, binary search, recursion and traversal.
When you practise, use a repeatable routine:
- Read the prompt once without coding.
- State the input, output and constraints in your own words.
- Identify the simplest valid approach before reaching for an optimised one.
- Explain the time and space cost.
- Test boundary cases before you submit.
This process matters because campus coding rounds reward reliability. A partially written advanced approach can score worse than a straightforward solution that handles empty input, repeated values, large inputs and unusual ordering.
If pattern recognition is where you lose time, read how to identify the right DSA pattern in a coding interview. It is especially useful for candidates who can solve a problem after seeing the solution category but struggle to spot that category independently.
💡 Pro Tip: Do not wait until your final week to practise with a timer. Timed practice teaches you when to abandon an unproductive route, which is as important as knowing a better route.
Round three — the technical interview
The technical interview turns an online result into a conversation. Here, interviewers can see how you reason, whether you understand your own code and whether your fundamentals hold up when questions become more specific.
For fresher roles, expect discussion across a broad base rather than one narrow speciality. A technical interviewer may ask you to explain a data structure, trace a program, write a small function, compare two approaches, discuss object-oriented programming, query a database or describe concepts from operating systems and computer networks.
Your résumé can also become the interview agenda. Any language, framework, project or skill you list is something you should be prepared to defend. If you mention Java, be ready to discuss its core concepts. If you list Python, explain the choices you made in a project. If you claim database knowledge, expect SQL and schema questions.
The strongest answers have three parts:
- a direct answer first;
- a brief explanation of why it is true;
- a practical example or trade-off where relevant.
That structure prevents two common problems: vague answers that sound memorised, and long answers that never reach the point.
The Operating Systems Sheet and DBMS Sheet are free to browse if you need a structured revision pass. Use them to find weak areas, then practise explaining concepts aloud without looking at notes.
Coding may also return in this round. The interviewer may ask you to improve an earlier solution, write pseudocode, explain complexity or solve a new problem live. In those moments, silence is expensive. Explain what you are considering, ask clarifying questions and say why you chose a particular structure.
Our guide to what interviewers actually look for in live coding interviews covers the habits that make your reasoning visible.
✅ Do: Clarify assumptions before you start writing code.
❌ Don't: Jump into implementation, discover a missing requirement, then silently rebuild the solution.
Round four — managerial or HR discussion
In the campus loop, an HR round is often less about advanced technical screening and more about professional readiness. That does not make it unimportant. It is where interviewers assess communication, motivation, location flexibility, team behaviour and whether your account of your experience is consistent.
Questions commonly begin with “Tell me about yourself”, but strong preparation goes beyond a polished introduction. Be ready to explain why you chose software engineering, what you learned from a project, how you handled a disagreement, what you do when you are stuck and what role you played in a group assignment.
Use specific examples. “I am a team player” is weak because anybody can say it. “Our project was blocked because two modules used different data formats, so I proposed a shared interface and tested the integration” gives the interviewer something concrete to evaluate.
Avoid treating this as a place for rehearsed slogans. The best answers sound organised, not scripted. They show self-awareness and ownership without exaggerating.
An AI mock interview can help you practise speaking through project stories, technical explanations and common HR questions. Record yourself if possible. You will quickly notice where your answer is too long, too vague or dependent on filler words.
TCS: a track-based campus funnel
TCS is a useful example of why this segment should not be treated like a generic product-company process. Reported accounts describe a sequence of NQT exam, technical Q&A, managerial discussion and HR, with candidates streamed into Ninja, Digital and Prime tracks that carry different pay bands.
The practical implication is that you should prepare broadly. The initial screen matters, but later conversations still test whether you can explain technical fundamentals, projects and career choices with confidence. Do not assume that a strong aptitude result removes the need for interview preparation.
If you are preparing specifically for the TCS competitive programming route, use our dedicated TCS CodeVita 2026 preparation guide rather than relying on a general campus checklist.
Nagarro: the longer coding stage
Reported accounts describe Nagarro as having an online screen, a separate coding stage, a technical interview and an HR round. The coding stage is the meaningful divergence: reports consistently describe a three-hour exercise covering data structures and algorithms.
That duration changes how you should practise. A short coding screen rewards quick recognition and clean implementation. A longer round also tests stamina, pacing and recovery after a difficult question. You need to decide which tasks to attempt first, avoid spending an hour on one blocked path and reserve time to test what you submit.
Reported accounts also describe technical discussions covering DSA, operating systems, SQL, language-specific questions and puzzles. Prepare the core subjects together rather than studying them in isolated silos. A candidate who can solve a coding prompt but cannot explain memory, queries or their chosen language leaves an incomplete impression.
Samsung R&D: confirm the role and centre
Reported Samsung R&D Institute India experiences vary by centre and role family. Some accounts describe a pen-and-paper stage focused on Python fundamentals, machine learning and software testing, followed by technical discussion around testing life cycles and bug reporting. Others describe an online coding assessment through the AON portal.
The lesson is not that one version is more correct than another. It is that you should not prepare from a single claimed Samsung script. Ask the recruiter or placement coordinator what role family, centre and format apply to you.
For a software testing-oriented role, revise testing vocabulary, bug reporting and the reasoning behind test cases. For a coding-oriented role, prioritise timed implementation and the data structure patterns that support it. In either case, know the project details on your résumé well enough to discuss your contribution clearly.
A practical preparation path
Start with the shared fundamentals, then adapt when you know the role-specific format.
First, build speed for the online screen. Spend regular sessions on aptitude, reasoning and coding basics. Keep an error log. If you repeatedly miss questions because you rush, work on pacing; if you repeatedly miss the same topic, revise that topic deliberately.
Next, make coding reliable. Use the free Code Practice environment for short timed sessions. Focus on writing complete solutions, not merely understanding editorials. Revisit problems after a few days and solve them without hints.
Then, revise technical subjects aloud. Use the free sheets for DSA, operating systems and databases. Build a personal list of topics you cannot yet explain simply. That list is more useful than another broad reading session.
Finally, rehearse the conversation. Practise introductions, project walkthroughs and technical reasoning with an AI mock interview. Your goal is to sound clear under pressure, not to produce a perfect speech.
A sensible final-week routine is one timed coding session, one fundamentals revision block and one spoken practice session each day. Keep the workload sustainable. Campus hiring rewards candidates who arrive rested enough to read carefully and communicate calmly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the usual IT service company interview process?
The common shape is an online aptitude or technical screen, a coding stage, a technical interview and an HR or managerial discussion. The exact sequence can differ by campus, role and hiring track.
Are coding rounds difficult for freshers?
They usually test core programming, data structures and implementation discipline. The challenge is often time pressure and correctness rather than obscure concepts. Pattern-based timed practice is the most useful preparation.
Do IT services companies ask aptitude questions?
Aptitude and reasoning are common in campus hiring screens. Prepare quantitative reasoning, logical reasoning, verbal ability and basic technical concepts rather than assuming the process is coding-only.
What should I revise for the technical interview?
Revise your programming language, DSA basics, object-oriented programming, databases, operating systems, computer networks and the projects on your résumé. Prioritise topics you can explain with examples.
How should I prepare for an HR round?
Prepare concise stories about your projects, teamwork, setbacks, strengths and career goals. Keep your answers specific and truthful, and practise saying them aloud rather than memorising scripts.
Is the Samsung R&D process the same for every role?
Reported accounts vary by centre and role family. Confirm the format with the recruiter or placement team, then focus your preparation on the skills relevant to the role.
How should I prepare for a longer coding test?
Practise sustained timed sessions. Decide task order quickly, submit working solutions where possible, test carefully and avoid spending too long on a single blocked problem.
Should I focus on projects if I am a fresher?
Yes. Projects often provide the clearest evidence of how you think and work. Know your architecture, choices, bugs, trade-offs and personal contribution well enough to discuss them without prompts.
Where should I start if my interview is soon?
Start with timed coding practice and your résumé. Then revise the technical fundamentals most likely to arise in discussion, and practise explaining your project work clearly in a mock interview.
