micro1 AI Interview (2026): How Zara Works, What's Asked and How to Pass
micro1 AI interview with Zara explained: format, coding challenge, proctoring rules, certification, whether it's legit, and how to prepare in 2026.

Rehearse the micro1 AI interview round before it counts
The micro1 AI interview is a spoken, conversational interview with Zara, micro1's AI recruiter. Per micro1's own interview guide, you answer open-ended questions tied to your chosen role, scenario questions about your reasoning and communication, and, for technical roles, a coding challenge. You get a real-time result showing whether you meet micro1's certification criteria. micro1 does not publish a fixed interview length; candidates report anywhere from about 15 minutes for a practice run to around 40 minutes for technical interviews.
As of October 2026, here is what is confirmed and what is only reported.
At a glance
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Who interviews you? | Zara, micro1's AI recruiter, in a spoken, conversational format. |
| How long? | micro1 does not state a fixed length. One candidate reported 28 minutes (shown on screen before starting); another reported a roughly 40-minute technical interview. |
| What is asked? | Role-based open questions, scenario questions, a coding challenge for technical roles, a data exercise for annotator roles. |
| Is it proctored? | micro1's help center describes proctoring as an enforceable option: full-screen share, webcam on, one screen. Employers can enable it per account or per job. |
| What do you get at the end? | A real-time certification result; if you do not certify, you can request feedback. |
| Can you retake it? | micro1's candidate help pages we reviewed do not state a retake policy. Email help@micro1.ai before assuming. |
| Is it legit? | micro1 is a real company covered by Forbes. Candidate complaints are about interview glitches, silence after interviews and data use. |
| Who supports you? | help@micro1.ai (email-only, per micro1's help center). |
What micro1 and Zara are
micro1 began as an AI recruiting company and now supplies experts such as engineers, doctors and lawyers for AI training and evaluation work. Forbes reported that micro1 raised more than $100 million at a $4 billion valuation, according to people familiar with the deal; micro1 declined to comment, so treat the figure as reported, not confirmed.
Zara is the AI recruiter that runs the interview. Per micro1's knowledge base, Zara runs structured interviews, scores candidate responses against predefined criteria and gives structured insight to human recruiters, who stay in control of decisions. A micro1 research paper describes Zara as using OpenAI's GPT-4o to run conversational assessments and generate practice interviews and feedback.
The stages of the micro1 interview
micro1 does not publish a single numbered process, so this is assembled from its pages and candidate reports.
- Apply through the Opportunities Portal. Candidates apply to roles on the platform.
- Choose a core skill or job type. micro1's guide suggests picking one core skill or role to be evaluated on.
- Optional practice. micro1's guide points to an Interview Prep tool for simulated interviews. Candidate-run guides describe a practice run of about 15 minutes.
- System check. micro1 provides a system check at interview.micro1.ai/check-system. Run it before your session.
- The interview with Zara. Spoken questions, a coding challenge for technical roles, a human data exercise for annotator roles.
- Real-time result. You see whether you meet the certification criteria, and can request feedback if not.
- Human review and matching. Recordings are available to human recruiters, who match certified candidates to roles.
One candidate report (a UX-role interview, written up on a candidate-run guide, not by micro1) describes two written application questions before the interview, a 28-minute interview with roughly one spoken question per focus area, camera and screen share on throughout, a performed-well email the next day, a certification email two days later and a match nine days after the interview. That is one person's timeline and the role was non-engineering, so do not treat it as typical.
The coding challenge
micro1's guide says there is a coding challenge for technical roles, but it does not describe its format. What we have is candidate reports, which are anecdotal:
- A Glassdoor review describes a roughly 40-minute AI-led interview with section-wise questions on FastAPI, Python and AWS, followed by a LeetCode-medium-style problem.
- Another candidate reports being asked to merge overlapping intervals, a standard array problem.
- A 2025 report describes spoken questions about Python, APIs, Django and AWS, then a separate coding exercise.
- The UX-role candidate above reported no code editor at all, which fits micro1's statement that the coding challenge is for technical roles.
Reasonable preparation, given those reports:
- Be able to explain stack choices for your listed languages and frameworks out loud, then solve one or two medium problems while narrating.
- Practise the interval, array, hash map and string patterns that show up in most screens. The free DSA patterns sheet covers them.
- Practise saying your approach, complexity and edge cases before coding. How to think out loud in coding interviews has examples.
Do not assume a specific language, time limit or test-case count. micro1 does not publish them.
Proctoring, as micro1 describes it
micro1's help center has a page on proctoring. It says:
- Proctoring is configurable by the employer, account-wide or per job.
- When enabled, candidates must share their entire screen, keep the webcam on and use only one screen.
- Zara logs the candidate's environment and actions, and micro1 lists the tactics it targets: multiple screens, mobile devices, off-screen help and AI tools such as ChatGPT or Copilot.
- Zara also flags responses likely to be AI-generated.
- If a candidate takes an action that stops the rules applying, such as adding a second monitor, cancelling screen sharing or turning off the webcam, the interview is suspended and can be resumed once the requirement is met again.
- After the interview, the recording is analysed by micro1's Ava model, and each proctored interview gets a proctoring score and a list of flagged behaviours. micro1 claims a 93 percent success rate at detecting cheating; that figure is from micro1 and we found no independent check.
What this means for you: follow the rules. Unplug extra monitors before you start, keep the camera on, close other apps and tabs, and do not use AI tools to answer. micro1 does not publish the score scale or the threshold at which a flag changes a result, so there is no safe margin to test. Practise under the same conditions instead, with one screen and your camera on, so the real session feels familiar.
Certification and results
Per micro1's guide, you get a real-time result showing whether you meet its global certification criteria, and you can request feedback if you do not. micro1 does not publish the criteria, the score scale or the retake rules on the pages we reviewed.
Candidate reports describe emails that say things like "satisfactory interview" or that the interview is "pending" or "under review", and some candidates report long silence afterwards. Autocomplete shows people searching those exact phrases, which suggests many are unsure what they mean. micro1's own pages do not define them. The practical reading is that a human recruiter reviews certified profiles and matches them to open roles, so certification does not guarantee an offer.
Is the micro1 AI interview legit or a scam?
The company is real. Forbes covered its funding, and its knowledge base documents Zara and the interview setup. The interview is how it screens candidates for its marketplace.
Where the complaints are. Third-party review summaries and forum threads describe interviews that freeze or fail to start, rejections without reasons, long waits, and suspicion that interviews are used to collect data to train recruiting AI. Trustpilot ratings are mixed. These are candidate reports and secondhand summaries from SEO-style blogs, and some are written by competitors or commercial sites, so treat them as signals to be careful, not as proof.
Sensible precautions:
- Only use the official micro1.ai site and the invite link in the email you applied with.
- A real process does not ask you to pay to be interviewed or certified. Walk away if anyone asks.
- Do not upload identity documents or bank details before you have spoken with a human and received a written offer.
- Do not share confidential employer or client information in answers.
Is the micro1 interview hard?
It is not an exam designed to trip you up. The hard parts are practical. You are speaking to an AI without social cues, questions can be long, you may have little time to think before answering and the clock is real. Slow, plain delivery is a good habit for any AI interview.
For technical roles the coding challenge is the real filter. If you can solve one medium problem while explaining your reasoning, and can discuss your main stack in depth, you are well placed.
How to prepare: 7-day and 3-day plans
7-day plan
- Day 1: Pick the single skill or role you want to be evaluated on. Write down what you have shipped in it, with numbers.
- Day 2: Prepare five explanations of core concepts in your stack, each in under a minute, spoken aloud.
- Day 3: Solve two medium coding problems while narrating approach, complexity and edge cases.
- Day 4: Practise scenario answers: a decision with trade-offs, explaining a complex topic to a non-specialist, handling disagreement. These match the focus areas a UX candidate reported, and they apply broadly.
- Day 5: Run micro1's Interview Prep tool if you have access, and a spoken mock with follow-ups. Our AI mock interview asks adaptive follow-ups, runs code against test cases and ends with a written report.
- Day 6: Run the system check, test camera, mic and screen share, use Chrome or Safari (not Incognito, Firefox or Brave), close other apps, and sit in a quiet, well-lit room.
- Day 7: Light review. Start the interview when you are rested, with enough time to finish.
3-day plan
Day 3 (coding with narration), Day 5 (one spoken mock) and Day 6 (system check) are the three that matter most.
Technical requirements and fixes
From micro1's help center:
- Laptop, desktop or mobile, with at least 8 GB RAM and 4 vCPU, and stable 4G or faster internet.
- Camera, microphone and screen sharing permissions allowed.
- Chrome recommended, Safari supported, latest versions. Avoid Incognito/Private mode, Firefox and Brave.
- Keep your camera centered, well lit and look at the camera. Close unnecessary apps and tabs.
- If something breaks, click "Having Trouble?" in the bottom-right corner, then email help@micro1.ai with your full name, application email, role and a screenshot. Support is email-only and responds within 24 hours Monday to Friday.
Candidate threads describe "interview not loading", "reconnecting" and "lagging" problems. The usual causes are blocked permissions, extensions, an unsupported browser or a weak connection. Fix those before you start.
Common mistakes
- Choosing too many skills. Pick one core area and know it well.
- Vague answers. Give a decision, the trade-off and the result.
- Silent coding. Say what you are doing and why.
- Setup surprises. A second monitor, blocked screen share or the wrong browser can suspend or break the session.
- Using AI to answer. Zara flags likely AI-generated responses and proctoring targets AI tools.
- Assuming certification means an offer. Humans review and match you afterwards.
Practising for an AI recruiter
The most realistic practice is spoken, with an interviewer that reacts to what you said. Thita's free AI interview does that for technical rounds. It runs your code against test cases for coding questions, covers system design and ends with a written report. The Starter plan is free, Pro adds more mocks, company kits and roadmaps. It is not a copy of micro1's interview, and we do not have any affiliation with micro1.
